How to verify whether your organization is eligible for a grant

Updated · GrantsJunction editorial

To verify eligibility, read the notice's eligibility section: confirm your organization's legal type is listed among the eligible applicant types, read any "additional information on eligibility" for restrictions (location, size, prior awards, partnerships), check cost-sharing and registration requirements, and email the agency contact listed in the notice if anything is unclear. Listing sites — including GrantsJunction — can show which applicant types a notice lists, but only the official notice and the agency determine eligibility.

Common eligibility traps

  • Nonprofit status: some notices require 501(c)(3) status specifically; others accept any nonprofit.
  • Higher education: colleges and universities are listed separately from nonprofits even when tax-exempt.
  • "Others" or "Unrestricted" categories always come with clarifying text — read it.
  • Geography: notices may limit applicants to specific states, rural areas or designated zones.
  • Limited submissions: some programs cap the number of applications per institution.

Frequently asked questions

If GrantsJunction says my applicant type is listed, am I eligible?

Not necessarily. It means the official notice lists that applicant type. Other requirements in the notice still apply.

General information, not legal or grant-writing advice. Rules can change — the official notice and the awarding agency govern.
