How it makes and monitors grants (Schedule I, Part IV)
All grant applications must go through a rigorous peer review process led by our research and grants committee - a distinguished board of renowned scientists, physicians, researchers and patients. through this process, scientists including experts in a particular area of cancer review and evaluate applications against a carefully prescribed set of criteria for judging the scientific merit and potential value of each proposed study. this review, not only includes a numerical grading of objective criteria, it also includes a subjective commentary with suggested modifications. upon recommendation by the research and grants committee, the application is submitted to gateway's board of directors for funding consideration. if approved and funded, gateway grantees submit regular reports (i.e., semi-annually) to the research grants department that summarize the progress of the funded trial according to the principal investigator's proposed timeline and milestones. annually, the research grants team reviews all reports submitted within the past year and assesses whether grants are "on track or "off track", with respect to patient accruals, timely reporting, and progress toward meeting study milestones. when needed, the research grants team consults with the reseach and grants committee to review and develop recommendations for the board of directors about those grants that they deem "off track". funding continuation decisions are contingent upon good progress/spending.
