How it makes and monitors grants (Schedule I, Part IV)

The foundation awards a grant only after determining the current tax-exempt status or charitable mission of the recommended grantee and confirming that the grant provides no benefit to the person or committee making the grant recommendation and furthers the charitable purposes of the foundation. foundation staff take the following actions prior to making a recommended grant: 1. confirm the purpose of the grant, assure that it is a charitable purpose, it provides no benefit to the person or committee making the recommendation, and that it furthers the charitable purposes of the community foundation. 2. determine whether the potential grantee is a tax-exempt organization or has a charitable mission. a. staff vets the ein using guidestar to determine the tax-exempt status is current per publication 78. if the potential grantee has no previous grant history with the foundation, staff makes phone inquiries to the organization to verify tax-exempt status and to attain the ein. if the potential grantee is a 501(c)(3) or other public charity recognized by the irs (educational organization, religious organization, not-for-profit hospital or a governmental entity), the grantee is approved. b. if the potential grantee recommended by a donor advised fund does not have a guidestar listing, and staff cannot otherwise verify the organization's charitable status, staff denies the grantee recommendation. c. for all funds other than donor advised funds, if the potential grantee does not have a
